Our senses

This week we have been learning about our 5 senses.

On Monday we started with learning about our sense of hearing. We listened to different sounds and matched them to the pictures.

Then we all had the chance to make a mini shaker.

The children chose to put rice or pasta inside and then decorated it.

We sang lots of songs and played instruments to go with the music.

On Tuesday we were exploring our sense of sight.

The children experimented with torches, magnifying glasses and kaleidoscopes.

We also learnt about being blind and had a go at building towers wearing blindfolds. It was very tricky.

On Wednesday we had a very smelly day. The child re enjoyed cutting up herbs and crushing mints and coffee beans with the pestal and mortars.

Then we made smelly pictures by sprinkling spices and herbs onto leaf shapes like glitter.

The children recognised ginger but struggled with the rest. They talked about smells they liked and disliked.

At the end of the day, the children tried to identify different flavours of crisps using just smell.

We ended the week with taste activities. This was the children's favourite day!

We talked about the parts of the tongue and where the different taste bugs are. For snack we had sweet popcorn, salty popcorn, bitter dark chocolate and a sour sweet.

The children were great at showing where they were tasting each one on their tongue.

During our maths circle time we made a fruit pictograms showing our favourite fruits. The children were great at seeing which was the most popular fruit and how many children had chosen each one.

We finished the day by guessing the flavour of chocolate using taste. Most children recognised mint chocolate but not orange.
